The upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is set for a huge global box office opening. It has been reported that the DC blockbuster could rank among the biggest superhero smashes ever when it is released at the end of March.
According to Deadline, the film is being tracked by industry experts to pull in between $300 million and $340 million on its opening weekend. This would place it fifth in terms of global superhero debuts, behind the two Avengers movies, Spider-Man 3, and Iron Man 3. The movie will open across the world simultaneously, including in the increasingly important Chinese market.
This latest report follows a story last week that placed the movie’s predicted domestic opening gross at between $100 million and $140 million.
Dawn of Justice is directed by Zack Snyder, who previously helmed 2014’s Man of Steel for DC, and is overseeing the company’s ongoing cinematic universe. In a new interview withEW, Snyder spoke about presenting the concept of a wider universe to studio bosses: “I pitched it to the studio like, ‘Listen, the idea is that Batman exists within the universe of Superman. And I go, ‘Guys, here’s the headline: Not just if Batman exists, guess what? Wonder Woman, the whole group.'”
In the same interview, Dawn of Justice producer Charles Roven described the challenge of fitting the various pieces of the universe together. “I’ve made a lot of films, but I’ve never had to be part of trying to craft together where this many films are related,” he said. “[Directors] have to decide as part of their decision to join the team, are they happy with what’s come before? From the time they join, they’re involved in any major decisions.”
Earlier this week, a new clip and several TV spots from the film were released–check them out here.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens on March 25, 2016. It also stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, and Laurence Fishburne.
